Issue

When opening a spreadsheet saved using the FYI Add-in for Microsoft Office, the following error displays:

"This workbook couldn't be opened because the file format may not be matching the file extension."

Cause

This issue occurs when there is a mismatch between the file format and the file extension.

The FYI Add-in saves Excel files using the .xlsx file extension. If Microsoft Excel is configured to save files in a different default format, such as .xlsm, the file contents and extension may not match. This can prevent the file from opening correctly.

Default Excel save format is not set to .xlsx

If Microsoft Excel is set to save files in a format other than .xlsx, files saved via the FYI Add-in may trigger this error.

Solution

  1. In Microsoft Excel, click File, then Options.
  2. Select Save from the left-hand side.
  3. In the "Save files in this format" drop-down, select Excel Workbook (*.xlsx).

This will resolve the issue for new spreadsheets saved using the FYI Add-in.

File requires a different format such as .xlsm

If the spreadsheet requires a different format, such as a macro-enabled workbook (.xlsm), saving directly via the FYI Add-in may result in a mismatch.

Solution

  1. Save the file to a temporary location on your computer.
  2. Ensure the correct file format (for example, .xlsm) is selected.
  3. Drag and drop the file into FYI to upload it.

This ensures the file extension matches the file format.

Existing file already has a format mismatch

If the error occurs with an existing file that was previously saved, the file may already have a mismatch between its format and extension.

Solution

  1. Export the file to a temporary location on your computer.
  2. Open the file in Microsoft Excel.
  3. Use Save As and select the correct file format.
  4. Upload the corrected file back into FYI as a new version.

This will ensure the file can be opened and edited correctly in FYI.
