Issue
When opening an Excel document for editing, the following message may display at the top of the spreadsheet:
- "Upload Blocked We ran into a problem with this file and can't save any new changes. Please save a copy to avoid losing your work."
- "The permissions on this file were updated and you no longer have rights to view this file. If you previously made changes to this file, they may not be saved."
This issue may occur when opening or editing Excel documents stored in FYI.
This message is generated by Microsoft Excel when it cannot synchronise the document through OneDrive. It does not indicate a problem with the document in FYI.
Cause
This issue is typically caused by the Microsoft document synchronisation status rather than the document in FYI.
For example, this can occur when:
- Two different Microsoft accounts are being used on the computer. Refer to the Microsoft article "UPLOAD BLOCKED" error when you save OneDrive-synced files in Microsoft 365 apps.
- A previous document has not synchronised correctly and appears under Files Needing Attention in Excel.
- OneDrive has a temporary synchronisation issue or upload backlog.
Because this message relates to Microsoft's document synchronisation process, it may appear intermittently and not occur every time a document is opened.
Solution
If the issue occurs frequently, switching the user to the FYI Desktop App can help avoid this error. The FYI Desktop App opens documents locally and synchronises them back to FYI after editing, bypassing the OneDrive synchronisation process that typically triggers this error.
To resolve the issue, expand the sections below and follow the recommended steps.
Check whether Excel has any files that require attention and resolve any pending uploads. Refer to the Microsoft article Files Needing Attention FAQ.
- Open Microsoft Excel.
- Click File.
- Select Open.
- Check if there are any files listed under Files Needing Attention.
- If files are listed, open the affected file and either save the changes or discard the upload.
- After resolving any pending uploads, try editing the document again from FYI.
Note: Office Upload Center has been deprecated and replaced with the Files Needing Attention feature within the Office applications.
Ensure the computer is configured correctly to work offline with FYI, including OneDrive. Refer to Configuring your OneDrive for use with FYI.
If the issue persists after checking Files Needing Attention and confirming the OneDrive configuration, it may be necessary to contact Microsoft Support to review the user's OneDrive synchronisation status.
