Connecting FYI to Power BI
Step 1: Install Power BI Desktop app
Download and install Power BI from the Microsoft Store. The integration with FYI is not available using the online version of Power BI.
- In FYI, navigate to Automation - Apps.
- Locate the Power BI app and select the cog icon to view the settings.
- Under Step 1, select the Install Power BI button.
- The Microsoft Store will open in a new tab.
- Select Download.
- The file will be downloaded to your computer.
- Select the file to begin the installation process.
- Follow the prompts to install Power BI on your computer.
Step 2: Download the sample Power BI report
FYI provides a sample Power BI report connected to a demo practice with sample data. Steps 3 and 4 below will update this report to connect to your FYI platform.
Once connected, the sample report can be customised as required.
- In FYI, navigate to Automation - Apps.
- Locate the Power BI app and select the cog icon to view the settings.
- Under Step 2, select the Sample Report button.
- The file will be downloaded to your computer.
- Open the file in Power BI.
Step 3: Connect FYI API keys
To connect Power BI, you will need to obtain the Access Key ID and the Access Key Secret from FYI.
You can only view the secret key once. To generate a new key, you must disconnect your integration and create a new secret key. We recommend copying and pasting the secret key to a secure location.
Multiple users can share the same FYI API keys to connect to the same FYI platform. If the integration is disconnected, all users will need to update to the new key to continue to access the data.
- In FYI, navigate to Automation - Apps.
- Locate the Power BI app and select the cog icon to view the settings.
- Under Step 3, click Create new secret.
- The Region, Access Key ID, and Secret Key ID will be displayed.
- Click the clipboard icon to copy the details to the clipboard, and paste the information into Power BI. Keep this window open, and refer to Step 4 below.
Step 4: Update the FYI API keys in Power BI
You can now connect the Power BI Sample Report to your FYI platform.
- Open the Power BI Sample Report downloaded in Step 2 above.
- Navigate to Home - Transform Data - Edit Parameters.
- Select the Environment option Production.
- Select the FYI Region displayed in FYI when creating the secret key in Step 3 above.
- Copy and paste the Access Key ID from FYI into the FYIAPIKEY field.
- Copy and paste the Secret Key ID from FYI into the FYIAPISECRETKEY field.
- Press OK.
- Click Refresh.
- The API keys will be applied, and the data from the connected FYI platform will be imported.
A pop-up will display the progress. The time it takes to refresh will depend on the amount of data.
Power BI Support Limitations
FYI offers a Power BI sample report that can be downloaded and customised for your practice, and detailed instructions on how to connect this report to your own FYI platform.
This integration is best suited for users with advanced Power BI skills.
We provide support for diagnosing issues related to the FYI API connection only.
We don't provide support for troubleshooting or issues caused by changes to the report, or when the report doesn't produce the expected data following any customisations. Nor do we provide support or training on using Power BI.
As we release enhancements and updates to the sample report, the latest version can be downloaded from the Power BI automation app in FYI.
