Why does a document show a ? question mark icon as the Type in the documents list and I cannot open it?

If you are seeing a document in documents list with the question mark icon as the Type, this indicates that it is a type of file that FYI cannot recognise.

This would be a file type such as .rtf (Rich Text Format) .html (webpage), .odt (Open Document Text).

From FYI, in the majority of cases, these files can be downloaded from FYI using Export. Then, if you have the appropriate application to open it on your computer, you can open it locally.

To export the file:

  1. In FYI, select the document in the list and Export it (refer to Exporting Documents).
In the Downloads pop-up or at the bottom of the browser, you will see the file extension of the exported file.
  2. From Windows Explorer, open the file and if prompted, select the application to use to open it.

Note: If you need to find out what type of file it is, you can run a search in Google such as "what is the file extension .aaa" where .aaa is the file extension of the exported file.

While certain files (such as .rtf, .html, .odt) can be opened in Word, they need to be converted to .docx so they can be imported back into FYI.

To convert the document and import into FYI:

  1. In FYI, select the document in the list and Export it (refer to Exporting Documents).
  2. From Windows Explorer, open the file in Word (this will likely open in Word if you double-click it).
  3. In Word, use File - Save As and save the file as .docx by selecting "Word Document .docx" in the drop-down of file type.
  4. You can then import the file into FYI using drag and drop or via your FYI - My Imports folder in OneDrive (refer to Drag and Drop and Using OneDrive FYI - My Imports to Automatically Import to your In Tray).
