What do I have to do?
Step 1 - Check which Windows Operating System you're running
The actions you will need to take depend on the version of your version of Windows.
The Microsoft Support site contains detailed instructions on how to check the version of Windows. Refer to Which version of Windows operating system am I running?
Note: Windows 11 users are not impacted by this change, and will not be required to take any further action.
Step 2 - Follow the instructions for your Operating System
Click on the tab below to follow the instructions for your Operating System.
Confirm your version:
- Confirm the Windows 10 Version is 1903 or greater i.e. Windows Updates have been run since 2019. The version is displayed when confirming the Operating System, as per above. Refer to Which version of Windows operating system am I running?
- Confirm the Microsoft 365 version is greater than or equal to 16.0.11.629 and less than 16.0.13530.20424. Refer to the Microsoft article About Office: What version of Office am I using?
Install the following applications:
-
Microsoft Edge - download the Microsoft browser and install it to your computer. Refer to the Microsoft page https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/edge/download
You don't need to use Microsoft Edge as your default browser, however, if you choose to use Edge with FYI in the browser you should ensure you have followed the instructions in Preparing your Browser for FYI.
-
WebView2 - Webview2 uses Microsoft Edge to render the web content in the apps. Install Webview2 here: https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-edge/webview2
Note: Volume Licenced versions of Office earlier than Office 2021 are incompatible with Edge Webview 2. You will need to upgrade to a newer version of Office. Refer to the Microsoft Article Browsers and webview controls used by Office Add-Ins.
Option 1 - Purchase a new computer (recommended)
If using Windows 8.1, Microsoft recommends purchasing a new computer with Windows 11. End-of-life support for Windows 8.1 ended on 10th January 2023. Refer to the Microsoft article Windows 8.1 support ended on January 10, 2023.
For more information on upgrading to Windows 11 refer to the Microsoft article Upgrade to Windows 11: FAQ.
Terminal servers:
Microsoft announced the end of support for Windows Server 2008 R2 effective as of 14 January 2020 and Windows Server 2012 R2 effective as of 10 October 2023.
If you are running a terminal server environment using Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012 or Windows Server 2012 R2 you will need to consider upgrading your server environment.
Option 2 - Temporarily install updated applications
While it's strongly recommended to upgrade to a Windows 11 machine as soon as possible, we appreciate this can take some time and planning.
For an interim solution, you can temporarily install updates on your Windows 8.1 machine.
You will need to install the following:
-
Microsoft Edge - Users of Windows 8.1 will need to install Microsoft Edge version 109, the last version compatible with Windows 8.1 (refer to the Microsoft article Supported Operating Systems for Microsoft Edge). Version 109 can be downloaded from the Microsoft Release Schedule.
- Webview2 - Webview2 uses Microsoft Edge to render the web content in the apps. Windows 8.1 users will need to install Webview2 using the Evergreen Bootstrapper. Click here to download and install Webview2: https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-edge/webview2.
Windows 7 reached End-of-Life in January 2020.
You will need to upgrade to a newer version of Windows.
